The Lighthouse

Yes, this poem may seem somewhat of a cliche, but it captures what I was feeling at this sunset moment. However, the perspective I take here is not from the confines of the shore but of the vast uncertainty of the sea. Or consider as well, other possible interpretations.

A beacon of hope burning bright,

It’s watchful eye searching the sky.

Standing a lonely vigil like

A star hung low, keeping me in sight.

Through the rain and mist I see it,

A solitary signal from the shore,

A lighted staff that calls to me,

A voice from a life before.

My ship is lost upon the waves

yet still the light remains.

It sings to me like sirens sing;

through darkness, wind, and rain.

Come to me, I’ll show the way!

Come home across the foam!

I’ll cast my light upon your path

And bring you safely home.

A gateway glowing in the night,

A promise faint but true,

A second chance for what is right.

A life I might renew.

I will suffer no loss of sleep,

Nor drift from shore to shore.

For you my restless heart to keep

And sail the seas no more.

Yet what is life but freedom,

To wander where winds blow.

And what is a harbor but a gate

That never lets you go?

Still, through the dark the beacon shines,

salvation at last, so it seems.

And oh, the joy at journey’s end

or… was it just a dream?
