I think this photograph and the poem that follows offer some possible answers to these questions. Consider the artist, shown here, who chooses to paint nature while standing within it.</image:caption>

<image:title>poetry - Just Old Men Now - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I have always believed that fame is a double edged sword. There are many positive and negative components to life in the public eye. This poem focuses on one of the negatives. On social media we constantly see images of our heroes when they were in their prime and compare their aging selves to that standard. A symptom of our culture’s obsession with youth, I think. And it saddens me.</image:caption>

<image:title>poetry - She Sweeps the Steps - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Perhaps it was the incongruity of this female caretaker sweeping the steps of this grand palace (photographed in Prague) with a simple broom that motivated the story told below. I did not speak with her, I don’t recall even seeing her face. I do not know her story. But this image has always had a powerful effect on me. So I gave her a story, a sad one to be sure; coping with personal loss! And just maybe, the simple repetitive task of sweeping will free her mind and bring some measure of relief even if it’s just for a matter of minutes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - In Repose - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Our dreams may offer some solace, a respite from some sadness. Or they may play out that memory in some strange and vague form that crystalizes the moment we awake. In any event, the unwanted memory always returns. A Lotus flower rising above a sea of green and blue at daybreak tells this story. But there is something inherently sad in the way it lists toward the light.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - The Shipwreck - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ll admit that I do not have a photo of a sunken ship. This will have to do. Here’s the connection; when I look at this photo it reminds me of the kind of shore where the detritus of a shipwreck would wash up. It’s rugged, uneven and uninviting. The poem, however, focuses on the moment an underwater discovery is made although the last stanza makes an allusion to experiencing the dangers of the sea from the relative safety of the shore. The poem was inspired by an article I read about modern day underwater treasure hunters. I was also inspired by the unforgettable scenes from the Titanic wreck.</image:caption>

<image:title>poetry - On the Beach - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s a rainy day on the beach. Bad news is never far from our day to day reality but we are always surprised when it somehow finds us, as if it were all just a profound mistake. Are you sure you have the right guy? Depending on the severity of the bad news our first inclination is some level of denial. Anyway, that’s what the experts say. Over time you come to the realization that you are not and never have been exempt! So when that bad news does arrive, why not just roll the dice? Why not go jogging in the surf even if it’s raining.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Simple Pleasures - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>There are times when we realize that the greatest pleasures are the most simple ones. I’ve catalogued a few in the poem below and you will quickly notice the use of sensory perception for each. Sadly, in my view, we don’t afford enough time to appreciate these simple pleasures. We are just too busy with all the important things we have to do! Right?</image:caption>

As I stated in the Category Section, I don’t do photo journalism very often but Truth, Honor, and Justice are on the ballot this time. A Populist/Fascist movement has made its hateful priorities clear. The results will define us for generations. Pray we make the right choice.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Destiny - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>As we grow older, we find ourselves reflecting more often on the meaning of life’s journey including the possibility that there is no essential meaning at all. In our search for answers to life’s mysteries, some turn to faith, some turn to purpose, and some, I suppose, turn to poetry. But I think, in the end, the answers we seek can be found in the love for those we share this journey with.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It’s an experience many of us have shared: You are strolling along an ocean beach at sunset and suddenly you have an urge to stop, look up, listen and smell the sea air. For a few brief moments you are caught up in a meditative trance as you ponder the beauty of the sky and the sea and how you came to be standing on this beach, at this time and in this place. The poem below might be your experience.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Another World - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>It is mid-July 2023. Temperatures are rising to record highs all across the globe; the hottest day ever recorded, the hottest year since records were first kept, fifteen plus days in a row over 110* in Phoenix, AZ, the ocean water in Miami reaching hot tub temperatures, all of Europe once again baking under the summer sun. Add to this scenario the forest fires with their drifting smoke, torrential rains leading to massive floods, tornadoes touching down in places where they are seldom seen, rising sea levels due to melting glaciers. I see it all covered daily on the news. What I don’t see is any nation, state, politician, or corporation doing anything about it. Watch-out folks! Our planet is fast becoming Another World.</image:caption>

I decided on a series of haiku that combine the sky, the ocean, the shore and the wagon in a brief story about hope and hardship. Or consider each haiku on its own merit! I found inspiration in Richard Wright’s This Other World and William Carlos Williams’ The Red Wheelbarrow. I took this photograph on the Isle of Skye in Scotland.</image:caption>

Go anywhere in old Lisbon and you can find an establishment where Fado (a Portuguese folk song that is “typically of doleful or fatalistic character”) is performed. The music was described to me by one Alfacinha (a person from Lisbon) as “the presence of absence.” I think that is what we were feeling as we walked along these quiet, historic streets.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - High Wire - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>This time the poem inspired the photograph. Consider High Wire a stream of consciousness morning rant meant to be read quickly. A new year, a new plan? More resolutions? I don’t think so. I’m tired of the phony nonsense on social media, the polarization in our country, the commercial rat race, a climate in crisis, lying politicians, senseless wars, racial hatred and everything else that keeps us running along that high wire. <image:title>poetry - Time to Organize - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I photographed this clock sculpture on Calton Hill in Edinburgh, Scotland. The words “Time to Organize” refer to the labor movement and the IWW specifically. Since I am obsessed with the passage of time, I interpreted the message in a different way by applying it to our personal lives in light of the fact that our time is limited. Yes, I used a few cliches here but I thought they helped convey the message. We all need some degree of order in our lives. We all desire harmony!</image:caption>

<image:title>poetry - Where did all the birds go? - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>For the first time I now live in what is essentially an urban environment. I never thought I would miss, as much as I do, seeing but more importantly, hearing the songbirds. Yes, the geese will fly overhead honking their instructions and I do hear an occasional owl hooting from a rooftop in the hour before daybreak, but no songbirds. I realized that I had taken their sound and their presence for granted just like we do for so many other positive experiences. It is sad to think that we can only truly appreciate such things when they are gone. Consider this warning from the Audubon Society: More than half of the bird species in the U.S. are in decline. There is a larger lesson to be learned here!</image:caption>

The question of religious faith is a theme that appears often in my poetry, evidence, I suppose, of my own struggle to come to terms with it. <image:title>poetry - The Great Silence - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I recently read The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace Wells. It scared the hell out of me! The bottom line is that we have about three decades to significantly reduce carbon emissions to achieve a best case scenario; an increase of one or two degrees Celsius. Even then, there will be dire consequences. If we don’t act now, the results will be catastrophic! The poem is a summation of what I read. I borrowed freely some lines from the author and his sources. They anchor the poem and appear in italics. The blackened landscape from the 2016 Pioneer Fire in Idaho was shot on a camping trip in 2021. So I ask: Where is the political will?</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Fear of Flying</image:title>
<image:caption>I have flown more times than I care to remember and yet each new flight is like the first. My imagination runs wild. My worst fears rise up into my consciousness no matter how unreasonable. I tell myself that it is safer than driving a car, that the odds and the statistics are in my favor. And yes, there is the thrill of the takeoff and the relief of the landing; but I am never fully at ease. For me, it is the utter lack of control; that you have placed yourself so completely in the hands of a stranger and an indifferent machine. I don’t even like being a passenger in a car! So this is where faith comes in: Faith in the machines we build, faith in our fellow man, and yes, faith in a deity. We need God (hope) in moments like this (because fate is so fickle and our future so uncertain) to make sense of the senseless. If you think about it, flying just makes the uncertainties of daily life more acute. Yes, a plane can crash. But we can also get hit by a bus, suffer a heart attack, or contract covid. So we pray!</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Smoke on the Water</image:title>
<image:caption>Smoke on the Water - Although the fires from California and Oregon had cast a pall of smoke across southern Idaho, we decided to go ahead with our plans to raft down the Snake River. In many ways it was a very surreal experience. The smoke in the atmosphere had created a dream like haze upon the water that made for some very compelling photographs. But for me, the fire and smoke became a metaphor for the political and social turmoil that raged beyond these canyon walls, while we drifted far below, isolated and content in our brief escape.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Blood Red Sun</image:title>
<image:caption>As if Covid was not sufficiently adding to our already darkened state of mind, a series of wildfires are raging across the northwestern states turning the sky a pale grey and the sun into a blood red orb. And still the violence in our streets continues. In particular, there is the sad story of a misguided seventeen year old who thought it was a good idea to take his semi-automatic weapon into a neighboring state to confront protestors. He killed two people. We live in a nation ravaged by climate change, disease, racism and political turmoil; and we are armed to the teeth! What could possibly go wrong?</image:caption>

This in a land ostensibly dedicated to the principles of liberty and justice for all. The struggle is as old as the nation itself and still we have yet to come to terms with America’s original sin. Perceptions must change if we are to survive as one nation. Let the protests continue until we have lived up to our ideals!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Alone in the Desert - I am writing this as I sit quarantined in my home. It’s been a week since our return from Morocco and yes, the inspiration for this poem is the photograph you see above. But I am also thinking of the isolation so many of us are experiencing as we shelter in place for protection against the coronavirus. As of this writing, the US has surpassed China and Italy for the total number of cases - and the death toll continues to climb with no end in sight. With the economy at a standstill and social life cut off, we are all in a virtual desert praying that the isolation we are feeling will soon come to an end and we can all enjoy the sounds of the market once again.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Gettysburg Dream</image:title>
<image:caption>As I have stated elsewhere on this site, the Gettysburg battlefield is a mystical place for me. When I walk these fields on one of my many visits, I always try to put myself in the brogans of the foot soldier on both sides. I know the history of each section of the battlefield and many of the anecdotal stories that go with it. I know the names of many of the men that fought here; I’ve read their accounts of the battle. But having never been in combat, all of my insight comes second hand. Therefore, I have to rely on a few lines of poetry to imagine what it may have been like for those men at Gettysburg, or on any other battlefield, in those last few moments before the battle is joined. I elected to write this as a sonnet.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Revelation</image:title>
<image:caption>I imagine that every age sees within its strife, the slow but inevitable advance of the coming end times. How can we not be fascinated and alarmed by the imagery of an apocalypse? If I were to experience my own revelation about our collective fate, it would be here (or some place like it); the hallowed ground of a battlefield that Joshua Chamberlain once called “a vision place of souls.” The photograph above is the Gettysburg battlefield at last light. Unlike Chamberlain, who fought here, I am drawn to this place for reasons I cannot explain. To create my interpretation of this photo, I incorporated some of the more powerful and enigmatic imagery from the Book of Revelation to supplement my own and, of course, borrowed the title. The end result here is both a poem and a prayer.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - On the 4th of July</image:title>
<image:caption>The flag on a bed of roses. Very much the idealized, romantic and preferred image of ourselves. I am writing on the eve of this year’s holiday, when the current occupant of the White House plans to co-opt the traditional celebration of our nation’s independence for political purposes. Just another affront to our national character. I’ve stopped counting how many have preceded it. American Democracy is under siege in 2019. It also occurred to me that we bring flowers to funerals as well.</image:caption>

Add his deep sad voice to the music and you have a soulful sound that creates a somber penetrating mood; a look at the dark side if you will. So you have this semi-nude female of stone, large slabs of cold quarry slate, and a dark pool…and the song Bloodline, the inspiration for this poem. The sculpture is actually called The Bather, located at the outdoor sculpture garden, OPUS 40.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We now live in a world where truths are no longer absolute. Truth is a commodity to be negotiated like a commercial treaty. In this new reality of “alternative facts” we are confronted with versions of the truth; every company, every nation, every political party offer up their own agenda to a public easily persuaded. In this post-truth world what can we believe, if anything? Today’s truths are packaged according to pre-conceived notions, promulgated through the noise machine that passes for public discourse, and sold to the non-discriminating consumer. It’s an easy con and we fall for it every time!</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Through the Open Window</image:title>
<image:caption>I had to go; to see it for myself, as difficult as that experience was going to be. At one point, as we moved among the barracks at Auschwitz, I came to this open window. I was struck immediately by the symbolism of that open window, suggesting to me the hope of escape and freedom. I wondered how many lost souls once stood in that spot gazing out of that same window dreaming of an alternative reality; one that placed them beyond the wire and the tower that were clearly visible within its frames. This poem attempts to tell that story. You will immediately recognize my debt to Ambrose Bierce’s Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. It seemed to me the perfect vehicle for telling this story as well.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Jesus on the Bridge</image:title>
<image:caption>This photograph was taken on a recent tour of Central Europe. This is the Charles Bridge in Prague which is lined with religious iconography including this crucifixion scene. I lost track of the number of cathedrals and shrines we visited, but they all had one common denominator; great displays of wealth and splendor. I have always been struck by the dichotomy of extreme poverty in the shadows of great wealth. Particularly when that wealth is embodied by the Christian faith; a faith based on humility and the grace of the dispossessed. Go inside any of these cathedrals or walk across the Charles Bridge and you will find the faithful, but also the curious, the lost, the poor. Walk a few blocks in any direction and you will see more of the same. I cannot help but think that some of this wealth could better serve the poor I saw on Charles Bridge.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Reaching for the Light - A Meditation on New Life</image:title>
<image:caption>I became a grandfather in the summer of 15. It was like a second fatherhood; a second chance to get it right (although I do believe I was a pretty good Dad). But being a grandparent is special for the simple reason that you get all of the delights and very few of the fights! We are here to spoil him, as my son and daughter in law often remind us. Still, the joy is overwhelming. Just to watch him play and then grab me by the hand to come join him. "Pop", he says, with his still limited vocabulary, and I am there! With each visit there is something new to discover; a kind of time-lapse evolution unfolds before us. He is taller, his hair is shorter (we wish his parents would let it grow), his memory better than my own, his curiosity; limitless. I carefully observe the earnest innocence of the very young and I wish I could freeze just that in time. You smile and wonder what life has in store for him, and pray that his problems then are as small as he is now. In the spring of 18, my second grandson joined our family. It is his picture you see above.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - The Wall</image:title>
<image:caption>Who can deny the metaphorical power of a wall; from separating borders to symbolizing adversity. They are pervasive in our history and our culture. From the Great Wall of China, to the Berlin Wall, to the very structures in which we live out our compartmentalized lives, to the barriers in our own minds; they permeate our existence. These walls only serve to isolate, imprison and diminish us, but yet we are somehow always willing to build more. The wall in this poem represents that moment in life when a person hits that height of despair and contemplates the most final of all decisions. The images in the poem were inspired by this photograph of a graffiti filled wall in an abandoned factory complex. Writ large in a bold white background, one word stood out!</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Dancing with Balloons</image:title>
<image:caption>When I took this photograph, I knew I had something special. When I processed it, I thought I had something spiritual. Start with the subject's white dress as she dances between giant hot air balloons as if she is participating in some kind of ritual or ceremony. White, of course, symbolizes purity and innocence. As for the balloons; at some point they will rise into the heavens taking their faithful passengers on a fateful journey. This balloon festival was like a religious experience for the participants. With this in mind, I incorporated a variety of religious allusions into the poem. Consider the purity of the faithful as they ascend into the cloudless blue sky, the redemption of the spirit as it floats in the soft morning light, and the joy that presages the long anticipated journey to another place. I hope you enjoy both the photograph and the poem.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Come Sit for Awhile</image:title>
<image:caption>Come Sit for Awhile - We have lived by a lake for over fourteen years now. In our current home the water is just fifty feet from our back door. There is a certain comfort that comes from lakefront living. There are the obvious recreational activities that it can afford; a swim in the early evening after a hot day, the surprising pleasure of landing a fish in the early morning light, or just floating in a tube with a beer in hand. But those are not the things I find most pleasurable. It's the sights and sounds of the lake I most enjoy; the ever changing patterns of the surface as the wind ripples its way across the cove, the long muted reflections of a glorious sunset, the sound of the geese honking their instructions to all who would listen. Yes, this is why we choose to live by the water. The solace to the senses is a form of meditation that allows us to escape, however briefly, those troubles of the soul. So I say, come join us and sit for awhile and lose yourself in the moment.</image:caption>

<image:title>poetry - The Homeless Man and the Passerby</image:title>
<image:caption>I admire good street photography but I am very cautious when it comes to executing it. Taking candid portraits of people in the street is a delicate matter. Lets face facts; very few people like having their picture taken! Even fewer without their permission. The dilemma, of course, is that the best street photography occurs when the photographer captures his subject unaware. What is the obligation of the photographer: To always ask permission and get a release? To shoot first and ask questions later? Or to operate with a measure of stealth that is, at the very least, a violation of privacy. I have asked permission in the past, but to be honest, most of my street photographs are taken without the subject's knowledge. I try to tell myself that they are in a public place which I have a right to record. However, there is always a level of guilt attached to these stealth photos. I can understand why celebrities hate photographers. Another element is that very often the most compelling photographs capture individuals at a difficult moment in their lives. I do not want to be a voyeur, but I do want the compelling photograph. So I take the risk and take the shot and feel extremely uncomfortable doing it. And yes, from time to time I am confronted. I will try to explain what I am doing and why. Sometimes I walk away with the shot and sometimes I don't. The poem that follows was inspired by a photograph I took in St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. It was the holiday season. This man seemed...tired. Once again, I try to remind myself that photographs like this raise our level of social awareness and just may lead to some collective attempt at mitigating the circumstances of those in need or at the very least, promote a sense of empathy.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Alida</image:title>
<image:caption>When I decided to go down the poet's walk, I purchased a thick used anthology of poetry. I started with the familiar names. I read Yeats, Wordsworth, Frost and Thomas, and Edgar Allen Poe. I was also inspired by a photograph that I shot on a wet, foggy morning. It's a black and white photo of a neat row of tombstones in a churchyard. One name was clearly visible on the center stone: Alida</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - The Steeple and the Tree</image:title>
<image:caption>This next poem is based on the theme of religion vs. nature; the man made world vs. the natural world. This debate is as old as recorded history. Still, it is a theme that appears often in my poetry. I have a love/hate relationship with religion. I acknowledge the beauty inherent in the stories, the code of ethics that form its foundation, and the power of faith. I abhor its divisiveness and its cult like suppression of free thought and scientific inquiry. On the one hand there is the natural world with its laws which are knowable through the application of reason and empirical study. On the other, there is religious dogma with its blind acceptance of the unknowable and its suppression of reason. Are the two ever compatible? I took a photograph of a church steeple in front of which was a large tree. The contrast struck me immediately. Religion symbolized by the steeple sharing time and place with a tree; a symbol of the natural world. Thus, the inspiration for this villanelle!</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Antietam Creek</image:title>
<image:caption>Dunker Church - Antietam National Battlefield - I have had a fascination with the American Civil War since I was a young boy. I have been to Gettysburg more times than I can remember. My bookshelves at home are stacked with Civil War history. I have been on bus tours, attended seminars and created and taught a high school course on the war. The poem you are about to read pertains to my second favorite battlefield site; Antietam. I am proud to say that I have donated money to the Civil War Preservation Trust (of which I am a member) to help save a portion of this sacred ground from development. My oldest son began his professional career here as a member of the National Park Service. So, like Gettysburg, I have walked this battlefield on many occasions. I believe that Antietam, not Gettysburg, was the turning point of the Civil War. Above all tactical and strategic considerations, the battle changed the meaning of the war. After all, Antietam gave us the Emancipation Proclamation. The battle unfolded in three distinct phases; morning, mid-day and afternoon. Each phase centered around a landmark you can still visit today. The Dunker Church (above) for the morning phase, a sunken lane for the mid-day phase, and finally closing around a bridge that became known to history as Burnside’s Bridge. Lincoln did visit the battlefield shortly after its conclusion. So did Mathew Brady, whose photographs of the unburied dead shocked the nation. The poem Antietam Creek follows the course of the battle including Lincoln’s and Brady’s visit.</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Bridge in Fog</image:title>
<image:caption>I have always been fascinated by dreams. Where do they come from? How do they develop? What meaning, if any, do they contain? Not long ago, I took a photograph of the Rip van Winkle bridge disappearing into a fog bank. It occurred to me that a dream is like that; the mind disappears in the mist and shapes and forms get distorted. A dream is a mirror image of reality on some level. My dreams are populated with people I know and on rare occasions, by creatures from the darkest depths of my id. Sometimes I remember them in great detail. More often only an uneasy feeling remains. I don't know how to interpret my dreams and I'm not sure I really want to learn. There are instances when I can connect a dream to some final thought as I drifted off to sleep. But it is the element of surprise that is more intriguing to me! Where did that come from? As disconcerting as they can sometimes be, I know one thing for sure; if I'm still dreaming I'm still alive, and that's a good thing! Here is my Bridge in Fog in 4 parts:</image:caption>

      <image:title>poetry - Late Sunday Afternoon</image:title>
<image:caption>It is so sad to see a once vibrant and vital building fall into slow decay. I suppose the same could be said of all of us. Like the things we build, time runs short on us all. The historic waterfront of a nearby village is a testament to the limited life spans of all things made of wood and bone. But as the song suggests, what once was dead can live again, just as the twilight of every late Sunday afternoon is followed by a new week.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dimming of the Day - Fujifilm X100T, 1/125 @ f/3.6, ISO400, 23mm. As photographers, we are always looking for that special light. I found it one early spring evening in a small Ohio farmhouse that belonged to one of my sons. This is the breeze-way just minutes before the sun set behind the hills. It’s a poignant shot for me because my son and his family have since moved out west. After visiting this home for six years we will never see it again. But I have this photograph and many others to keep the memories alive. On a bright note, the rocking chair did make the trip. Oh, and I borrowed the title from a Bonnie Raitt song.</image:caption>

It was a memorable experience for me because we were on a jeep excursion at the time, winding our way through this valley on a narrow dirt road. Driving a jeep and taking pictures; my idea of a good time! It was late in the day so the light coming off the mountains was just right. By the way, we did spot a moose in that tall grass on the other side of the river.</image:caption>

We were making our way up the trail to the top of the waterfall (you can only see a small portion here) when I spotted this vantage point. The forest canopy was open just enough to offer this fabulous view of the falls. You can actually go behind the waterfalls “Last of the Mohicans” style. It was raining hard that day so I was caught between my desire to get the shot in a photo rich environment and protecting my equipment. I took some risks!</image:caption>
